Common Name:
Pingpong Ball Cactus
Scientific Name:
Epithelantha micromeris
Type:
Plant
Diet:
Autotrophic
General Description
The pingpong ball cactus is small and spherical, typically measuring under 5 cm in diameter. Its lush white spines nearly obscure the greenish-gray body underneath, creating a striking visual texture that is both aesthetic and functional in shielding it from the harsh sun.
Habitat
Native to the arid regions of the southwestern US and northern Mexico, the pingpong ball cactus favors rocky slopes and limestone hills at elevations from 400 to 1,800 meters. Sparse vegetation characterizes its habitat, reducing competition and allowing the cactus to prosper in harsh, sun-drenched environments where water is scarce.
Life Expectancy
The pingpong ball cactus can survive for more than 50 years in its natural habitat thanks to its slow growth rate and ability to conserve resources in challenging climatic conditions. It blooms in late winter to early spring, producing small pink and white flowers at its crown.
Did You Know?
The pingpong ball cactus often grows in clusters, which protects it against herbivores and creates microhabitats that benefit other species.
