General Description
The chautle-living rock is round and small, standing at just 2.5 to 6 cm tall and 5 to 15 cm in diameter, split into 7 to 10 segmented ribs. Its greenish-brown hue, complemented by white scales, conceals the striking yellow blossoms that bloom from red bases, all encased within a soft, fuzzy exterior.
Habitat
Once widespread, this plant now only grows in selected parts of the South of the US and the North of Mexico. It prefers thorny scrublands and rocky areas, but it used to inhabit richer grasslands that have since been transformed by urban development.
Life Expectancy
Under optimal conditions, the star cactus can live for over 30 years. It produces vivid yellow flowers in spring that attract bees and other pollinators.
